About Mel…
Melanie, originally from El Dorado Arkansas, began her study of movement and the human body in the fine arts at schools in London, Stuttgart, Germany, and Barcelona. A competitive cheerleader in high school and university, she developed a keen since of movement in her own body through rigorous and demanding training. In 2001 she began a deeper study of anatomy and movement therapies at The Massage Institute of Memphis. The next year she began a comprehensive Pilates certification through Ellie Herman Pilates Studios at Push Pilates. There, on Union Avenue in Memphis, she first began her 23 year journey of exploring the blending of manual therapy/massage to release tension and restrictions, with Pilates for body awareness and strength.
Always a student, she completed an 100hr Om Yoga teacher training at Midtown Yoga and a 200hr yoga training with Variyoga in Fayetteville, Arkansas. There, she also studied advanced massage therapy for chronic pain and TMJD with physical therapist, Joseph Reagan, MSPT. Weaving her practice between movement, strength training and release, she spent 2005 in Barcelona where she was introduced to Thai Massage therapy and was an avid recipient of that sacred modality. Since then she has studied with many teachers and practiced hundreds of hours of Thai massage therapy. Upon her return to the US she moved to San Luis Obispo, California for a year long apprenticeship and certification in the Gyrotonic Expansion System® Level 1. With a lust for travel and Spanish, she then traveled to Escazu, Costa Rica to teach and practice at a bustling Pilates studio. In 2010 Mel returned to Memphis to run the Pilates program at New Ballet Ensemble where she stayed for 6 years teaching large groups of teen dancers and the professional company along with joyous community classes. Interested in delving deeper into manual therapy she then relocated to Sundara Wellness Center where she worked with pelvic floor PTs and saw hundreds of pre and post Natal mamas for pelvic floor support, pelvic stability, Prenatal massage, Thai massage, deep tissue massage, and pre and postpartum Pilates classes specializing in diastasis recti and other common issues associated with pelvic floor health. With the science of facial manipulation becoming more and more intriguing, Mel then turned her focus on Myofacial release and trained with Bobbi Carter and the Healing Point. For the past three years she has run a small private studio blending all of her experiences into a dynamic culmination of her years of study. They say Jack of all trades, master of none. However, Melanie has been simply focused on one thing, understanding the human body and it's beautiful complexity. Currently Mel is working to blend the newest understandings of our facial network into her practice.
Drawing from a diverse background in disciplines and culture, Mel hopes to enliven those who come to her sessions by encouraging the building of a deeper awareness of their bodies, an increase in quality of breath, a fun, flowing work out and a deeper level of strength!
